This ancient caryatid maiden originally stood as an architectural element in place of a temple column, supporting the entablature on her head. Her flowing tunic is masterfully carved in marble, its complex drapery rendered with detailed realism. She stands with her weight on one leg in a naturalistic contrapposto – a signature pose developed in Greco-Roman art.
